Diamond Anatomy: Understanding the Parts of a Diamond
What is diamond anatomy?
Although every diamond is unique, all diamonds share the same basic structural features. These parts work together to form the overall shape and structure of the diamond.
Understanding diamond anatomy can help explain how a diamond is formed, how it is graded and how its characteristics are evaluated.
The table
The table is the large flat facet positioned at the very top of the diamond. It is the most visible part of the stone when viewed from above and forms the centre of the diamond’s upper surface.
The crown
The crown refers to the upper portion of the diamond, located between the table and the girdle. This section contains a number of facets that contribute to the overall appearance of the diamond.
The pavilion
The pavilion is the lower section of the diamond, located beneath the girdle. This part of the diamond extends downwards toward the base of the stone and forms the lower structure.
The girdle
The girdle is the outer edge of the diamond where the crown and pavilion meet. It forms the perimeter of the diamond and separates the upper and lower sections of the stone.
The culet
The culet is the small point at the very bottom of the diamond. It sits at the base of the pavilion and marks the lowest point of the diamond’s structure.
